Abhyangam Ayurvedic Full Body Oil Massage — Prakriti Ayurveda Chennai

In the ancient text Ashtanga Hridayam, Vagbhata writes: "Abhyangam aacharet nityam" — one should perform Abhyangam daily. After more than two decades of clinical practice at Prakriti Ayurveda, we have seen this simple recommendation transform the health of thousands of patients across Chennai.

What Is Abhyangam?

Abhyangam is a full-body warm medicated oil massage — Ayurveda's most foundational therapeutic and preventive practice. Unlike conventional massage that focuses primarily on muscles, Abhyangam works on the seven body tissues (Dhatus) — plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and reproductive tissue.

At Prakriti Ayurveda, our Abhyangam uses oils specially formulated with the essence of 46 herbs, following formulations from Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala. The oil is warmed to therapeutic temperature and applied with long, rhythmic strokes from head to toe, followed by a warm herbal bath.

"The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much, even if subjected to accidental injuries or strenuous work." — Charaka Samhita

Evidence-Based Benefits of Regular Abhyangam

1. Deep Cellular Detoxification

The medicated oils penetrate through the skin into deeper tissue layers, binding to fat-soluble toxins (ama) and mobilising them for elimination. When followed by steam or sauna — as we do at Prakriti — sweating expels these toxins through the skin. Clinical Ayurvedic studies show reduction in oxidative stress markers following regular Abhyangam.

2. Nervous System Regulation

The rhythmic strokes stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. Patients who receive weekly Abhyangam at our centres regularly report dramatic improvements in sleep quality, anxiety levels and emotional resilience within four to six sessions.

3. Joint and Muscle Health

The warm oil lubricates joints, reduces friction and nourishes the synovial fluid. For patients with early-stage arthritis, stiffness or muscle fatigue, regular Abhyangam slows degenerative changes and significantly reduces pain without pharmaceutical intervention.

4. Skin Health and Anti-Ageing

Abhyangam is the single most powerful anti-ageing practice in Ayurveda. The herbal oils deeply nourish the skin, improve elasticity, reduce dryness and give a lasting radiance. Patients notice visible improvements in skin texture and tone within a month of regular sessions.

5. Immunity and Vitality

By stimulating lymphatic circulation and improving Ojas (the refined essence of all body tissues), Abhyangam strengthens overall immunity. Regular patients report fewer seasonal illnesses and sustained baseline energy throughout the day.

What to Expect at Your Abhyangam Session

Your session at Prakriti begins with a brief doctor consultation to select the appropriate medicated oil for your constitution. The massage takes approximately 45 minutes, performed on a traditional wooden Droni by trained therapists, followed by a 15-minute steam or sauna and a warm herbal bath.

Duration: 1 hour  |  Price: ₹2,500

Shirodhara: The Liquid Meditation That Melts Stress

Shirodhara Warm Oil Forehead Therapy Stress Relief Prakriti Ayurveda Chennai

Stress, anxiety and sleeplessness have become an epidemic in modern urban life. Many patients walk into Prakriti Ayurveda having not slept well for years — and leave after a course of Shirodhara having rediscovered what deep rest feels like. Shirodhara is one of Ayurveda's most powerful therapeutic interventions for the nervous system, and its effects are often described by patients as more profound than any conventional treatment they have tried.

What Is Shirodhara?

The word Shirodhara comes from Shiro (head) and Dhara (flow). It is an Ayurvedic therapy in which a continuous, rhythmic stream of warm medicated oil is dripped onto the forehead — the region known as the Ajna Marma, the vital energy point between the eyebrows.

At Prakriti Ayurveda, Shirodhara is always performed after Abhyangam, as the combination dramatically amplifies the therapeutic effect. The oil is held in a specially designed copper vessel suspended above the patient and released in a pendulum motion across the forehead for 45–60 minutes.

"After Abhyangam, Shirodhara calms the Vata in the nervous system, dissolves tension patterns held in the brain, and creates a state that is beyond sleep — yet fully conscious." — Dr. Divya P S, Prakriti Ayurveda

The Neuroscience Behind Shirodhara

Modern research demonstrates that Shirodhara significantly reduces cortisol levels, increases serotonin and dopamine activity, induces alpha brainwave states comparable to deep meditation, activates the parasympathetic nervous system and improves sleep quality comparable to pharmacological sleep aids — without dependency.

Conditions That Respond Remarkably to Shirodhara

Anxiety and Chronic Stress

The constant stimulation of the forehead's skin receptors by warm oil creates a neurological override — interrupting the anxiety loop in the brain. Patients with generalised anxiety disorder frequently report that a course of 7 sessions produces relief that medications failed to provide for years.

Insomnia and Sleep Disorders

Shirodhara is perhaps the most effective natural treatment for insomnia. The combination of warm oil, hypnotic rhythm and grounding Abhyangam resets disrupted sleep architecture. Most patients sleep deeply the very night of their first session.

Migraine and Chronic Headache

By balancing Pitta and Vata in the head region and calming the nervous system, Shirodhara reduces both the frequency and severity of migraines. At Prakriti, we combine it with Nasyam (nasal oil therapy) for patients with chronic migraine — with consistently impressive results.

What the Experience Feels Like

The most common patient description is: "Like my mind finally stopped talking." Many enter a dreamlike state — fully conscious but profoundly still. Almost all emerge with a sense of lightness, clarity and profound calm that persists for days.

Is Your Back Pain Curable with Ayurveda? Understanding Kativasthi & Panchakarma

Kativasthi Medicated Oil Pool Lower Back Pain Treatment Prakriti Chennai

Back pain is the leading cause of disability in India. Conventional medicine offers painkillers, physiotherapy and surgery — these address symptoms. They rarely resolve the underlying cause. Ayurveda takes a fundamentally different view, and over 22 years at Prakriti Ayurveda we have successfully treated thousands of patients with lumbar spondylosis, disc prolapse, sciatica and chronic back pain — with no side effects and lasting results.

How Ayurveda Understands Back Pain

In Ayurveda, most lower back pain is Kati Shoola — caused by aggravated Vata dosha, which dries out the joints, depletes disc cushioning, causes muscle spasm and triggers nerve irritation. This aligns precisely with modern orthopaedic findings: dehydrated discs, inflamed joints, compressed nerves and muscle tightening.

"Ayurveda does not just manage back pain — it reverses the degeneration that causes it, by restoring proper lubrication, circulation and nervous function to the lumbar region." — Dr. Monica Chitnavis, Prakriti Ayurveda

Kativasthi — The Most Effective Single Treatment for Lower Back Pain

Kativasthi is an Ayurvedic procedure in which a dam made of black gram (urad) dough is created on the lower back and filled with warm medicated oil maintained at therapeutic temperature for 30–45 minutes. The sustained application:

  • Penetrates deep into vertebral joints, nourishing intervertebral discs
  • Relaxes paraspinal muscles, releasing chronic spasm
  • Reduces inflammation in facet joints and surrounding tissues
  • Restores Vata balance — reducing nerve irritation and referred pain
  • Improves local circulation, accelerating tissue healing

Patients typically report significant pain reduction after 3–5 sessions, and complete resolution after 7–14 sessions combined with internal Ayurvedic medications. Price: ₹2,000.

Supporting Treatments

Elakizhi and Podikizhi

Bolus-based fomentation therapies — using fresh leaves (Elakizhi ₹2,600) or herbal powders (Podikizhi ₹2,400) — reduce inflammation, improve circulation and restore mobility. Particularly effective for sciatica or disc herniation.

Panchakarma Vasthi

For severe or chronic back pain — including disc prolapse, ankylosing spondylitis or spondylolisthesis — Panchakarma Vasti therapy offers the deepest and most lasting results. Medicated enemas act directly on the colon (seat of Vata) with profound spinal benefits. Prakriti's Panchakarma programmes run 7 to 28 days.
